Long-term care planning
Plan for care so your family doesn't have to carry it alone
Most of us will need help with daily life someday. A plan helps you stay at home longer, protect your retirement savings and keep your children from becoming full-time caregivers.
What a long-term care plan can do for you
Help you stay at home
Most people want care at home. A plan pays for help so you can stay where you're comfortable.
Pay for what Medicare doesn't
Medicare doesn't cover ongoing help with daily living. Your plan fills that gap.
Protect your retirement savings
One long care event can cost $300,000 or more. A plan keeps savings for your spouse.
Give your family breathing room
Your children can be family, not full-time unpaid caregivers.
A care plan may be right for you if…
You want to stay in your own home as long as possible
You'd rather not depend on your children for daily care
You have retirement savings you want to protect for a spouse
You're between 40 and 65 and still in good health
A parent or relative has needed care and you saw what it cost
You want your life insurance to do more than pay a death benefit
How care benefits work
- 1When you need care
A doctor certifies you can't do 2 of 6 activities of daily living, or have a severe cognitive impairment.
- 2Waiting for benefits
Many policies and riders have a waiting (elimination) period, often 90 days, before benefits start.
- 3Benefits are paid
You receive monthly payments or a lump sum, depending on the policy or rider.
- 4Benefits continue
Payments continue while you qualify, with yearly recertification, up to the policy's limits.

Where are you in life?
Lock in protection while it's cheap
- Choose term or IUL with a living benefits rider. It often costs little or nothing extra.
- Name a durable power of attorney and health care agent.
- Build an emergency fund that could cover a 90-day waiting period.
Your best planning window
- Compare a chronic illness rider, hybrid LTC and traditional LTC side by side.
- Consider moving part of a 401(k) into an annuity with care features.
- Talk with your spouse and children about where you'd want care.
Protect what you've built
- Know what Medicare won't pay: ongoing custodial care.
- Check your existing policies for nursing home waivers and riders.
- Learn the Medicaid 5-year look-back before moving assets.

Long-term care questions
What is long-term care?
Help with everyday activities such as bathing, dressing, eating and moving around, or supervision because of memory loss. It can happen at home, in assisted living or in a nursing home.
Does Medicare pay for long-term care?
No. Medicare covers short skilled nursing stays after a hospital visit, up to 100 days, not ongoing custodial care.
How much does long-term care cost?
2025 U.S. medians are $80,080 a year for a full-time in-home caregiver, $74,400 for assisted living and $129,575 for a private nursing home room. Costs vary widely by state.
Can life insurance help pay for long-term care?
Yes. Many term and IUL policies offer chronic illness riders that advance part of the death benefit if you can't perform two of six daily activities or have a severe cognitive impairment.
When should I start planning?
Between 40 and 65, while you are healthy. Options narrow and prices rise with age and health changes.
Does TrueFin sell long-term care insurance?
We are licensed for life insurance and annuities, including policies with living benefits and annuities with care features. For standalone or hybrid LTC insurance, we refer you to an LTC-licensed specialist.
